Fifty Sides of the Beach Boys
A closer, deeper look at one of America's greatest pop bands of all time.
By Carlo Wolff / June 27, 2012
Fifty Sides of the Beach Boys: The Songs That Tell Their Story By Mark Dillon ECW Press 289 pp.
EnlargeCanadian journalist Mark Dillon?s book about one of the most important American pop groups is fan-based journalism at its best ? and much more. It?s an entertaining, even-handed examination of the great southern California band through commentary on 50 of its tunes by members, collaborators, and musicians the Boys influenced. Timed to coincide with the reconciled group?s 50th-anniversary tour and a new album, Fifty Sides of the Beach Boys it?s far more keeper than souvenir.

Over their often-conflicted career, the Beach Boys have been inspiring, experimental, courageous, innocent, wounded ? and creative. Brian Wilson, their troubled yet persistent leader, is a musical genius. The other Boys were lesser lights, but Brian couldn?t have wrought what he did without them.
Journalism about Brian, his entrepreneurial and aggressive cousin Mike Love, and Brian?s brothers Carl and Dennis ? the first dead of cancer, the second drowned ? is usually framed as a story of heroes and villains, and the Beach Boys were indeed dysfunctional. Wilson p?re Murry, a failed musician, was a tyrant, which Dillon doesn?t soft pedal. At the same time, Dillon gives Murry his due as a goad to the group?s creativity. He even tempers a commonly held negative view of Eugene Landy, the discredited Hollywood psychoanalyst Brian?s wife, Marilyn, hired in 1975, suggesting in an interview with ?15 Big Ones? engineer Earle Mankey that though Landy was a control freak who charged outrageous prices for his counsel, he did help the errant and troubled Brian return to the studio.
In 1967, when the Beach Boys foundered over ?Smile? (original title: ?Dumb Angel?), a storied album that went officially unreleased until last year, I bought Van Dyke Parks? brilliantly opaque ?Song Cycle,? one of the earliest free-form rock recordings. In Dillon?s interview with ?Smile?-obsessed Apples in Stereo leader Robert Schneider, Dillon says Parks abandoned his collaboration with Brian Wilson on ?Smile? because of resistance from other group members, instead settling into work on ?Song Cycle.? Such back stories give ?50 Sides? factual muscle. (Too bad Parks wouldn?t make himself available for an interview.)?
When I interviewed Mike Love in 1970 in Burlington, Vt., during Love?s visit to a Transcendental Meditation center to push Maharishi Mahesh Yogi?s methodology, I found him smug and guarded. The headline on my? Burlington Free Press story: ?Lie Around Your Lear Jet and Be a Star.?
In 1982, as a reporter for the Schenectady, N.Y. Gazette, I reviewed the Beach Boys at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and found myself backstage standing next to Brian Wilson. He was bearded and heavy and seemed in a kind of trance. At the end of 1986, after I moved to Cleveland, my first freelance article for the Cleveland Plain Dealer packaged an interview with Stephen Gaines, a Beach Boys biographer, with commentary on ?Smile,? the aborted and at that time heavily bootlegged album many consider the group?s crowning achievement.
The Beach Boys matter to me.
After reading this book, which features interviews with everyone from group stalwart David Marks (on this summer?s reunion tour) to Dennis? good friend and touring band associate Billy Hintsche to ?Sail on Sailor? lead vocalist Blondie Chaplin, they might well matter to you, too. In effect, Dillon joins the reader to the Beach Boys? family, extended over 50 years and as many tunes, many of them unexpected choices that will send you back to your iDevice. They might even persuade you to fire up your turntable.
Turns out, despite Brian?s assertion that he wasn?t made for these times, the Beach Boys were made for all times.
The author of ?Cleveland Rock & Roll Memories,? Carlo Wolff is developing ?Invisible Soul,? a book about underground Cleveland soul music from doo-wop to disco.

AMD outs new G-Series APU, extends platform lifetime until 2017
You may not have thought it possible, but today AMD is introducing a new G-Series APU that's even more efficient than previous models in the series. The G-T16R is built for super-low power, small form factor designs like set-top boxes, medical equipment and industrial control units. These new chips continue the trend of including a multi-core x86 CPU and GPU to ensure compatibility between legacy, current and future technologies. The company has also extended the platform's life until 2017, adding a further five years to its expected lifespan -- ensuring that you won't get left in the cold the next time you need to update your system.

Lie-detector tests ordered to ferret out leaks
AP file
Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, center, emerges from a closed-door meeting with the House and Senate Intelligence Committees aimed at stopping security leaks on June 7, 2012, on Capitol Hill in Washington.
By Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube, NBC
U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper on Monday mandated new measures, including lie-detector tests,?to prevent and detect unauthorized leaks of sensitive national security information to reporters.
Under the new policy, effective immediately, anyone with a security clearance within the Intelligence Community will be required to report any substantive contact with members of the media and any arranged meeting or any encounter where business was discussed.?The reporting requirement does not include incidental contact ? a chance encounter at the grocery store, for instance.
The?Intelligence Community is?a coalition of 17 agencies and organizations within the executive branch.
The move is an attempt by Clapper to take the Central Intelligence Agency's strict policy regarding leaks of classified information and apply it to employees of all Intelligence Community agencies including the Defense Intelligence Agency, Department of Energy, Federal Bureau of Investigation, National Geospatial Intelligence Agency, National?Reconnaissance Office and the National Security Agency.
Clapper's move comes in the wake of news reports derived from leaked information about U.S. involvement in cyberattacks on Iran and an alleged al-Qaida plot to bomb a U.S.-bound flight.
From now on, the polygraph test for anyone seeking a classified clearance for any intelligence service will include a specific question regarding contact with journalists and unauthorized leaks to the media.
In the event of a leak, anyone in the Intelligence Community who would have had access to the leaked information is subject to a polygraph test regarding that specific leak.
Anyone who fails could have their security clearance revoked and could be subject to a criminal investigation.
Anyone who refuses the polygraph would immediately have their security clearance revoked and?could be subject to additional administrative action and a criminal investigation.
These new rules do not apply to?U.S. military with security clearances not assigned to an intelligence agency,?or to White House officials or members of Congress.
Clapper said the inspector general of the Intelligence Community will conduct independent investigations to ensure that unauthorized disclosure cases suitable for administrative investigations are not closed prematurely.
"These efforts will reinforce our professional values by sending a strong message that intelligence personnel always have, and always will, hold ourselves to the highest standard of professionalism," said Clapper. "It is my sincere hope that others across the government will follow our lead. It is the right thing to do on behalf of the American people and in the interest of our national security."
Senior U.S. officials tell NBC News that in the end, these new guideline may have little practical effect, since most of the leaks traditionally come from reporters? sources who do not work directly for the intelligence community.
Two U.S. attorneys have been appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder to lead a Justice Department inquiry of the recent leaks.
Republicans have suggested the leaks were orchestrated to boost President Barack Obama's re-election bid.

Pinterest for Android to be unveiled at Google IO?
Pinterest has been the hot new service of 2012, but we're still lacking an official Pinterest Android application. It looks like that might finally change this week at the Google IO developer conference in San Francisco. Our eagle-eyed pals at Ausdroid spied Pinterest listed in the Sandbox attendees. And, sure enough, in the description line it says "Now available for Android." You can't actually download it yet, but that's a pretty good sign that we should see Pinterest for Android this week.
And don't forget that we'll be at Google IO all week, so bookmark this page for all the updates! Here we go, folks!

MLS roundup: Revolution rallies for draw
By The Associated Press
Associated Press Sports
updated 12:01 a.m. ET June 24, 2012
TORONTO (AP) -Chris Tierney scored in second-half stoppage time to complete New England's comeback and lift the Revolution to a 2-2 draw with Toronto FC on Saturday.
With the Revolution (5-7-3) trailing 2-0, Blake Brettschneider cut the deficit in half in the 71st minute as he knocked in a rebound past Toronto goalie Milos Kocic.
Danny Koevermans put Toronto (1-10-2) ahead in the 4th minute and Ryan Johnson doubled the lead in the 42nd, before it gave up a two-goal lead for the second straight game. Houston scored two late goals to pull to a 3-3 draw against Toronto on Wednesday.
Both Toronto goals came from headers inside the 18-yard box on pinpoint crosses from the left side by defender and Canadian international Ashtone Morgan.
UNION 4, SPORTING KC 0
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Jack McInerney scored twice and Philadelphia snapped a six-game winless skid.
Lionard Pajoy converted a penalty kick in the 81st minute after Antoine Hoppenot was fouled in the box and Hoppenot also had a goal in the 87th minute for the Union (3-8-2). Philadelphia, 0-5-1 in its previous six, won for the first time since beating Chivas USA 1-0 on April 21.
Philadelphia entered the game having scored a league-low eight goals. However, McInerney got the Union on the board early with a goal in the second minute. He added his second in the 43rd minute.
Kansas City (9-4-2) snapped its four-game unbeaten streak.
IMPACT 4, DYNAMO 2
MONTREAL (AP) - Hassoun Camara got his first MLS goal and Patrice Bernier scored on a penalty kick in the second half, lifting Montreal past Houston.
Sanna Nyassi and Davy Arnaud also scored for Montreal (5-8-3).
Will Bruin got his ninth goal and Brad Davis also scored for Houston (5-5-5). Former Impact forward Brian Ching had an assist.
Houston's Adam Moffat received a red card after bringing Montreal's Felipe Martins down hard in the 73rd minute.
The Impact took the lead when Arnaud flicked Martins' corner kick to Camara, who scored with a header at the far post in the 60th minute. After Felipe went down in the penalty area following a light shove from Geoff Cameron eight minutes later, Bernier converted the penalty kick.
FIRE 2, CREW 1
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - Marco Pappa and Dominic Oduro scored in the first 26 minutes to lead Chicago.
The victory moved the Fire (7-5-3) within three points of third-place New York in the Eastern Conference. Columbus, dominated from the start by the Fire, had entered the game with a six-match unbeaten streak (3-0-3).
The Crew's last loss was on April 28, 1-0 to Vancouver.
Pappa maneuvered to the edge of the penalty area, and using a screen, ripped a right-footed shot off the hands of diving goalkeeper Andy Gruenbaum in the second minute.
EARTHQUAKES 2, REAL SALT LAKE 1
SANDY, Utah (AP) - Reserve forward Alan Gordon scored a goal and assisted on another from Chris Wondolowski to lift San Jose past Real Salt Lake.
The victory allowed San Jose (10-3-3) to move into first place in the Western Conference. Javier Morales scored for RSL (10-5-2), which suffered its second straight home loss in MLS action and third consecutive setback at Rio Tinto Stadium overall.
The Earthquakes opened the scoring in the 76th minute when Ramiro Corrales played a long ball down to Gordon inside the box. Gordon headed the ball over Rimando before he could get to it. The ball bounced across the goal line and into the net to give San Jose a 1-0 lead.
CHIVAS USA 0, FC DALLAS 0
FRISCO, Texas (AP) - Dan Kennedy finished with three saves to help Chivas USA tie FC Dallas.
With the tie, FC Dallas (3-9-5) extended its winless streak to 11 games to set a new club record. The previous record of 10 games without a win was from July 2 to Sept. 10, 2005. FC Dallas is 0-7-4 during its winless streak and has been shutout four times during that span.
Chivas USA (5-7-4) salvaged a tie despite only managing a season-low two shots. FC Dallas finished with 13 shots.

PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) ? A Chinese crested's short snout, beady eyes and white whiskers earned it the title of World's Ugliest Dog at the annual contest in Northern California on Friday.
Competing for fame, $1,000 and a year's worth of dog cookies, Mugly won the honor by beating out 28 other ugly dogs from around the world.
The 8-year-old rescue dog from the United Kingdom will also be invited for a photo shoot and will receive a VIP stay at the local Sheraton.
"I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name," said Bev Nicholson, the dog's owner. "I didn't know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog."
It's not the first time Mugly has been recognized for his unattractiveness. Nicholson said he was named Britain's ugliest dog in 2005.
The contest at the Marin-Sonoma Fairgrounds gets worldwide attention, with reporters and camera crews from around the world traveling to Petaluma, about 40 miles north of San Francisco.
Organizers say the competing dogs are judged for what they term their "natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes."
Mugly's victory was the latest for a Chinese crested. Last year's winner, Yoda, was a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix.

Microsoft Dividend, Mexican Debt: Today's Hunt For Income Turns Investors Into Globetrotters
Remember what grandma?s basket of goodies used to look like?
Her portfolio, that is. What she planned to live on during her declining years. In the past, that probably meant a smattering of U.S. government bonds, perhaps some dividend-paying stocks.
Today, that wouldn?t keep a household going for long. A slow American recovery, along with Europe?s problems and a permeating sense of worry means greater interest in income-building assets. In turn, that means lower yields, and in some cases, a money-losing investment on government bonds. That means raised eyebrows over companies? ability to shell out steady cash. And that means the S&P 500?s dividend yield is near 2%, about a third of its 10-year average.
Gran needs to go global. These days, it?s as much about Mexican debt as Microsoft?s dividend.
That?s how PIMCO?s Curtis Mewbourne sees things. I recently caught up with Mewbourne, to determine where the fixed-income money man expects the greatest returns in this topsy-turvy world. Serving as both a portfolio manager and on PIMCO?s investment committee, Mewbourne possess a fine-tuned outlook. Edited excerpts from our conversation:
FORBES: What?s confronting income-oriented investors today?
Mewbourne: The changes in the global financial market mean that some asset classes and some securities are changing, and their use in a portfolio is changing, too. Five years ago, a European saving for his child?s education would have sensibly said, I want steady returns, so I?ll invest in European government bonds. Fast forward to today, just a few years later, and you may have a very different opinion on those investments. You?re looking at losing some of your principal and questioning the steadiness of that income.
Another matter: central banks around the world have reduced interest rates to incredibly low levels. That caused a distortion of the prices and yields from government bonds. In Europe, the U.S. and Japan, government bonds can yield less than inflation. You?re getting negative returns?you?re losing money buying those bonds.
Should a portfolio be concentrated in one area?a place with more perceived safety, perhaps?
We?re basically trying to broaden our opportunity set and trying to have more smaller exposures to more areas. It?s not so much about any one broad market. It?s more how many different opportunities you can find.
Where are you looking for bonds?

Legal Immigration: What it used to look like
My Greek grandmother, 1960. (Yeah, she scared us, too.)
There?s so much whining today about the plight of illegal immigrants ? ?oh, the suffering! I had to hide all the way through my BA and my master?s degree at at publicly-funded university!? ? that I thought I would pass along a quick piece of history.
I was going through my father?s papers in preparation for the inevitable (he?s 94, and not well), and I came across the usual metal box that every older parent seems to keep that contains all of the documents ? I repeat, documents, not ?un?-documents ? that constitute at least a partial record of a family?s existence.
My grandparents, every one of them, came to the United States around the turn of the 20th century. All of them spoke with accents. (My Irish grandmother, in theory, spoke English, if you understood that an ?unnun? was an ?onion.?? To stay in her good graces, you also had to accept that Bobby and Jack Kennedy lived in Heaven with the Holy Spirit.) All of them entered the United States legally, and have their names inscribed on the wall at Ellis Island.
The Ellis Island wall
But the streets, as it turned out, weren?t paved with gold. In fact, they weren?t paved at all. And being an immigrant pretty much sucked: the only thing that would suck worse would be, say, to have stayed in Greece or Ireland in 1908. (We think Nana hightailed it out of Eire because she was trying to outrun an arranged marriage, but since everyone involved is now dead, that mystery will never be solved.)
Anyway, all of them went to work in the mills of Western Massachusetts, which were only somewhat less ?dark and satanic? than their British counterparts immortalized in William Blake?s 19th century poetry. (Plus, it was a lot colder in New England than Old England.)
Liverpool? Not quite. Holyoke, Mass., circa 1940.
A mill like many others, circa 1937, near where I later grew up.
My Irish ancestors eventually found relatively more skilled work in places like the public water department, not only because they could speak English (kinda), but also because the Irish Catholics steadily took over the scut-work the WASPs would delegate to them. Eventually, they took over the city government, too, and perfected the long, proud tradition of complete corruption and patronage that plagues New England to this day.
My Greek grandmother got a job in the mills, and then in the WPA. And here?s where it really sucked to be an immigrant:
Ever seen one of these? No? Didn?t think so.
You?ll notice that she was fired, summarily, in 1937 because she was an ?Alien,? and because there was a U.S. citizen available to do the work.
America was still in the grip of the Great Depression; Theresa Nicolaides was at that time nearly 40 years old. Her 19 year old son lived upstairs with his wife and young son (bad life choice, but he came from an era when people really didn?t have access to contraception). He was also working a miserable job assembling dolls in a nearby factory, and was laid off soon. A few years earlier, the family had successfully fought off an attempt to foreclose on their home; my grandfather was not well and died of a stroke during World War II.
But here?s the really important part: no one in my father?s family really thought anything of it. Of course the job would go to a U.S. citizen; why wouldn?t it?
Oh, I can hear it now: ?But Tom, today, these are jobs that Americans won?t do!?
Really? Check the Reuters story from last week again. I?m pretty sure there are plenty of Americans who?d be more than happy to be computer science majors at UCLA. But one of those seats happens to be taken up by a kid whose parents snuck him in here in violation of U.S. law years ago. (Imagine giving him an expulsion notice that says: ?U.S. citizen is available to take this seat in class.?)
The Reuters caption: ?Fabiola Santiago, an undocumented UCLA student with a masters degree in Public Heath, attends a graduation ceremony for UCLA ?Dreamers?, or Dream Act students, at a church near the campus in Los Angeles, California June 15, 2012.? An MPH. I swear I?m not making this up.
Eventually, everyone in my family got their U.S. citizenship, but my parents (again, all born in the U.S) didn?t finish high school during the Depression and its aftermath. My mother chose the U.S. Air Force for a few years, and got a better start in life than she could have dreamed, joining up with her sister and serving proudly during the Korean War until her father?s death forced her to come home.
Should have thought about that before you signed the papers, kid. Clearly, not a math major.
After a lot of tough jobs and small apartments, they managed to buy a home, travel later in life, and help me as best they could to work my way through school. I paid my student loans, thanks, and they were at a lot higher interest than the giveaways kids are getting now. (I made my last payment as I was pushing 40, but I paid them. ?Occupy Wall Street? can kiss my ?receipts.)
So the next time you?re moved by a sob story about some kid who can?t tell his classmates at UCLA about the fact that he?s actually not a U.S. citizen, take out Mrs. Nicolaides?s 1937 termination notice, and think again.
The children of illegal aliens are here because their parents brought them here, and their parents, and no one else, are responsible for their state of affairs. (And remember, saying ?well, they?re here now? isn?t an answer: it?s merely a statement of fact that has no bearing on what to do next. Saying that the children are not at fault doesn?t mean that no one is at fault.)
Still, if you feel badly for these families, you can apparently console them during ceremonies at UCLA, where their children are graduating just like all the other American kids who got to go to graduate school at a fine, publicly-funded U.S. university.
