New life for decades-old Wis. cheddar blocks

This photo provided by Kenneth McNulty shows a 28-year-old block of cheddar, one of three boxes of unintentionally aged cheddar recently discovered in a Milwaukee cheese market. The three boxes _ 28, 34 and 40 years old _ will be auctioned to the public. Some experts say it might comprise the oldest collection of cheese ever assembled. (AP Photo/Courtesy Kenneth McNulty)

(AP) ? A recently discovered block of eastern Wisconsin cheddar cheese that dates back to the Nixon presidency will be sold for $10 per ounce.

Edward Zahn, 73, was in Z's Cheese Shoppe's walk-in cooler last month, preparing to shut down his Oconto store. He pushed aside stacks of cheese to reveal several wooden boxes that had been overlooked for years.

Inside were blocks of unintentionally aged cheddar ? 28, 34 and 40 years old ? that, some experts say, might comprise the oldest collection of cheese ever assembled and sold to the public.

"It just got overlooked," Zahn told the Wisconsin State Journal of the 40-year-old cheese. "It looks just like the others except it's just a lot sharper. It's got character."

Ken McNulty, who owns the Wisconsin Cheese Mart in Milwaukee, bought about 20 pounds of the 40-year-old cheddar and 120 pounds of 34-year cheddar. He declined to reveal the price he paid.

Cheese is often sold by the pound, but McNulty plans to sell the oldest cheese by the ounce so more people can get a taste.

"Because there's so little, we didn't want to sell blocks of it on the Web," he told The Associated Press. "We just wanted people to sample it."

He said an ounce would be just enough for two people to nibble on. He suggests sampling the vintage cheese by itself, not with a cracker or other food that would compete with the flavor.

He said he found out about the cheese when Zahn's son called, told him his father was closing up shop and offered to sell some inventory. McNulty, long a fan of Zahn's cheesemaking expertise, said he wanted everything.

McNulty sampled the 40-year-old and 28-year-old blocks, pleasantly surprised that the milk in the cheese hadn't soured. He still hasn't tried the 34-year-old cheese, and acknowledges that he can't assume it will be edible. He plans to cut it open on Oct. 6 as part of a cheese-tasting event at his store.

Wisconsin, the nation's leading cheese producer, last made headlines for aged cheese in 2010 when Tony Hook, the co-owner of Hook's Cheese Co. in Mineral Point, sold 1,600 pounds of 15-year-old cheese for $50 per pound. Cheese connoisseurs described that cheddar as mature, rich, smooth and decadent.

So what does cheddar taste like when it's been sitting around since 1972, the year "The Godfather" was released and when gas was 55 cents per gallon?

"If you get a piece close to the outside, it's all crystallization, so it's crunchy like Corn Flakes," McNulty said. "As you get closer to the interior, it's creamier and overwhelmingly sharp."

Feature: Classic Gaming Typos, Errors and Translations - NintendoLife

Conglaturations for reading this

Earlier this week there was a great deal of chortling at a minor grammatical error in New Super Mario Bros. 2, with the initial Coin Rush notification being the offending screen; many of us actually missed it in our eagerness to play the mode itself. There's also a bit of a grammatical slip-up in the North American information sheet/manual as well, so wrists will be slapped in the localisation departments of Nintendo.

In any case, it seems only fair to show off the fact that typos, appalling grammar and rather iffy translations were relatively common in the 'good old days'. Many are looked back on with fondness today, though whether gamers of the time would have been as forgiving is hard to say. Either way, the Nintendo Life team trawled its collective memory banks to pick out some well-known or high profile examples to show that, sometimes, text in games can go very, very wrong.

Nope, it's not a real name

Nope, it's not a real name

Double Dragon III ? Bimmy and Jimmy

Ah yes, Bimmy and Jimmy. Retro gamers had probably spotted this long ago as a rather lazy typo in the opening sequence for Double Dragon III: The Sacred Stones, but it became famous in an early video of a certain YouTube celebrity. It's the kind of error made if typing in a hurry and not double checking text properly, which happened relatively often in the 8-bit era.

Ghostbuster's message of "Conglaturation"

Like a number of NES titles, Ghostbusters was tricky to beat, though that was the case on various other platforms as well. It's only natural that if a player defies the odds and actually reaches the end screen they want something worth their while; a cool image, a basic animation or slideshow of screens from the adventure, or whatever could be crammed onto an 8-bit cartridge. What a gamer is unlikely to want is a black screen with the following text.

CONGLATURATION !!!

YOU HAVE COMPLETED
A GREAT GAME .

AND PROOVED THE JUSTICE
OF OUR CULTURE .

NOW GO AND REST OUR
HEROES !

No, that's not a good ending.

Yes you are

Yes you are

"I am Error" in Zelda II

This character in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link is famous for obvious reasons, possessing one of the strangest names in video game history. As you'd expect of any quirk or anomaly in a Zelda game, there's more than one theory about the nature of the, um, error. One theory is that the game's code displayed this text when it failed to generate the correct name due to a flaw in the system, while others argue that it's a deliberate reference to bugs and errors. The latter, presented as a theory on zelda.wikia.com, is that a similar character called Bagu, the translation of bug from Japanese, is the other half of deliberate bug/error references. Who knows, but it's a name that'll be famous for as long as we have video games.

"A Winner is You!" from Pro Wrestling

This is one of the most famous examples of poor grammar from a Japanese to English translation, and has transformed into a popular internet meme that's been referenced a lot in popular culture. Pro Wrestling on NES was a prominent title in its day, and the victory message of A WINNER IS YOU put the cherry on the sundae for gamers in love with this classic wrestling game.

Wily endures a double fail

Wily endures a double fail

"My scheme for world domination has faild" from Mega Man 6

We had plenty of examples from the Mega Man series, but we've chosen one that perhaps has the biggest helping of irony. The ending to Mega Man 6 has Wily (as Mr X) declare the following after being defeated by the Blue Bomber.

MY SCHEME FOR WORLD
DOMINATION HAS
FAILD!

So has your quest to greet your end with class and dignity, Wily.

Ghosts 'n Goblins ending screens

Ghosts 'n Goblins on NES is fondly remember by some, but is also pretty darn challenging and difficult to beat. Much like Ghostbusters it has an ending with enough shoddy text to make anyone blush, with the notable exception that it does have a couple of nice sprites on screen to make it all a bit better. That doesn't spare it from being ruthlessly exposed by us, though.

CONGRATURATION
THIS STORY IS HAPPY END.
THANK YOU.

BEING THE WISE AND COURAGEOUR
KNIGHT THAT YOU ARE YOU
FEEL STRONGTH WELLING
IN YOUR BODY.
RETURN TO STARTING POINT.
CHALLENGE AGAIN!

Thankfully we had the strongth to type that out... er, strength.

Oh, Yoshi

Oh, Yoshi

Yoshi - "It that really you" in Super Mario 64

On Super NES, Yoshi became a star. His appearance in Super Mario World endeared him to so many that he had his own game in the sequel, Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. When Super Mario 64 came along, however, the focus was on Mario and the dinosaur was out of the spotlight. He did make an appearance, however, if you collected 120 stars and got Mario up to the castle roof. Yoshi's appearance wasn't perfect though, as he unfortunately says "Mario!!! It that really you???" This was apparently fixed in the DS re-release years later, but Yoshi had already blown his big moment.

"I feel asleep" from Metal Gear

Metal Gear on NES wasn't the same classic that was released in Japan, but a distinctly iffy remake/re-imagining with a fair share of glitches and rubbish text. Within 30 seconds you come across a guard that says "I feel asleep", which sets the tone for the rest of the game, really.

These are just a few examples, but there are so many more. Don't be surprised if we revisit this in the future, but until then we'd like to see some of your favourite typos, grammatical errors or dodgy translations in the comments below.

"Bachelorette" first pre-theatrical release to top iTunes chart

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - "Bachelorette," a raunchy comedy from the Weinstein Company's multi-platform distribution shingle RADiUS, has become the first pre-theatrical release to top the iTunes Top Movies chart, according to the company.

Directed by first-timer Leslye Headland, the comedy boasts an ensemble cast of well-known actors, including Kirsten Dunst, Isla Fisher, Lizzy Caplan, Rebel Wilson, James Marsden and Adam Scott.

Drawing comparisons to "Bridesmaids" and "The Hangover," it depicts three best friends hell-bent on having perhaps too good of a time before their best friend's wedding, threatening the nuptials in the process.

Adam McKay, Will Ferrell and Jessica Elbaum are producers, through their Gary Sanchez Productions. BCDF Pictures' Brice Del Farra, Claude Dal Farra and Lauren Munsch also produced.

"We are beyond thrilled to hit this milestone," Tom Quinn and Jason Janego, co-presidents of RADiUS, said in a statement. "From day one, our goal has always been to bring content to viewers when, where and how they want to see it."

TWC founded RADiUS to release movies across many platforms, experimenting with the best combinations of distribution methods. Releasing a film on iTunes before its theatrical release is but one example.

Autoantibodies damage blood vessels in the brain

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

The presence of specific autoantibodies of the immune system is associated with blood vessel damage in the brain. These findings were made by Marion Bimmler, a graduate engineer of medical laboratory diagnostics at the Max Delbr?ck Center for Molecular Medicine Berlin-Buch and Dr. Peter Karczewski of the biotech company E.R.D.E.-AAK-Diagnostik GmbH in studies on a rat model. The researchers' results suggest that autoimmune mechanisms play a significant role in the pathogenesis and progression of Alzheimer's and vascular dementia (PloS ONE, doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0041602)*.

Antibodies are the defense molecules of the body's immune system against foreign invaders. If the antibodies cease to distinguish between "foreign" and "self", they attack the cells of the own body, and are thus referred to as autoantibodies. These can trigger autoimmune diseases. Using MR angiography and other methods, Marion Bimmler and her colleagues have now shown that the autoantibodies bind to specific surface proteins (alpha1 andrenergic receptors) of vascular cells and thereby damage the blood vessels of the brain. The reason: The autoantibodies generate a continual stimulation of the receptor and at the same time trigger an increase in intracellular calcium ion levels. As a result, the blood vessel walls thicken, and blood flow to the brain is disturbed.

First Encouraging Results after Removal of Autoantibodies by Immunoadsorption

In earlier studies, Marion Bimmler and her research team examined blood samples of patients with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia and showed that half of them had comparable autoantibodies. A first clinical trial together with Charit? ? Universit?tsmedizin Berlin is currently ongoing with a collective of patients with Alzheimer's or vascular dementia. The patients were divided into two groups ? a small group whose autoantibodies were removed from the blood via immunoadsorption and a control group that did not receive this treatment. Until now, over an observation period of 6 and subsequently 12 months, the patient group who had undergone immunoadsorption improved in their memory performance and in their ability to cope with their everyday lives. In contrast, the condition of the patients who did not receive immunoadsorption treatment and continued to have autoantibodies in their blood deteriorated dramatically. Now the researchers are planning further clinical trials with larger numbers of patients.
