BlackBerry 10 Live Blog - Business Insider

At a big press conference in New York, RIM announced two new smartphones and that the company is officially changing its name to BlackBerry starting today.

The new smartphones are called the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Q10. Both will run the brand new BlackBerry 10 mobile operating system.

The phones will launch in March in the U.S. Prices will vary by carrier, but should cost around $150-$200 with a carrier contract.

Check out the live blog for updates from the event as they happened.

This is super scripted and boring.

Again, this is really, really bizarre.

He promised to cut his hair when BlackBerry 10 launches. He's cutting his hair in front of the audience. This is sad.

Time to get to the real news.

"Two years ago we made a tough decision."

RIM chose to go it alone and make its own new platform instead of adopting another. (Like Android).

4.2-inch display running BlackBerry 10.

First BB10 smartphone with a physical keyboard. It also has a touchscreen.

It's thinner, lighter, and stronger than plastic.

blackberry 10

You can quickly and easily switch between apps with a swiping gesture.

This is very impressive.

Black keys with white lettering, just like the old-school BlackBerry keyboard. It also predicts what word you're going to type next, and you can "flick" the word up into the text field.

You can make video calls over BBM. It's a lot like FaceTime on the iPhone.

You can share your entire screen with another BB10 user.

It's basically a note-taking app. Sort of like Evernote.

Lets you choose a series of photos and videos to make a slide show. You can choose your own music too. The app stiches the content together automnatically. You can make some neat presentations with it.

SAP, Angry Birds, etc.

All the major music labels and movie studios on board.

By the end of February, completing lab testing with carriers. U.S. market: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile will begin announcing launch dates and price plans starting today. Should launch in the U.S. in March.

She's using a really weird dating metaphor about how she "broke up" with BlackBerry and now she's back.

Heins: Mid-March launch. Reason is that the testing process in the U.S. is rather lengthy...we want to respect their process.

Heins: Star solutions as an open platform. Customers can choose whatever service they want.

Heins: Working with carriers to get the Z10 out the door. Q10 is expected to launch in April

Heins: Working on software update for all tablets out there. Says will continue in the tablet space, but wants to focus on services on top of the tablet. Won't just focus on creating new hardware.

Answer: We have the full support from our ecosystem...we will have more than 100,000 apps at U.S. launch. Will focus on marketing to win over U.S. consumers.

Heins: Agreed in advance that these will be the two screen sizes BlackBerrys will have for a while. We will not fragment our ecosystem.

Heins: Charges with standard USB connector. There will be a removable battery so you can swap them out. There will be a charger accessory that lets you charge extra battery along with the one currently in your phone.

Alicia: You'll see me at the Super Bowl. But I'm very dedicated...

(She's just rehashing talking points.)

Wellpoint Profits Jump 38%; Why Are Health Insurance Premiums ...

Wellpoint Profits Jump 38%; Why Are Health Insurance Premiums Still Rising?

By: Consumer Watchdog

WASHINGTON, D.C. Jan. 25, 2013 - Health insurance giant Wellpoint today announced a 38% profit increase in the 4th quarter of 2012, as compared to last year, for a total $2.7 billion in net profits for 2012. The insurance company continues to pad its profits even as the growth of health care costs remains at record-low levels and the company is forcing double-digit premium increases on consumers and small businesses across the country, said Consumer Watchdog.

"Health insurers are talking out of both sides of their mouths when they preach austerity to their customers in order to raise premiums, then turn around and announce another banner year to shareholders. As federal health reform requires health insurance companies to disclose more and more information online, it will be harder for insurers to say one thing to customers and the opposite to Wall Street. Still, consumers remain unprotected in many states where no one has the power to reject an excessive rate hike, even when company profits exceed projections," said Carmen Balber, executive director of Consumer Watchdog.

New rules from the Department of Health and Human Services have begun to open health insurance companies' books, by requiring insurers to publicly file all proposed rate increases. However, because many states lack the power to require justification and approval of rate hikes, unreasonable rate increases continue to take effect, said Consumer Watchdog.

Anthem Blue Cross, Wellpoint's California subsidiary, recently imposed an unreasonable rate hike on more than 250,000 small business customers in that state according to an analysis by California's insurance commissioner that found, among other things, that the "company-wide rates of return on equity have been and remain excessive." California regulators do not have the power to reject excessive rates, so Anthem was able to impose the increase despite the commissioner's finding it was unreasonable.

In California, insurance reform law Proposition 103 regulates auto, home and business insurance rates, and requires insurers to open their books, publicly justify and get approval for rate increases before they take effect. That law was enacted by the voters in 1988 and has saved California drivers $62 billion on their auto insurance premiums.

An initiative measure that has qualified for California's 2014 general election ballot would require health insurance companies to public justify and get approval for rate increases before they take effect.

3D Systems, Stratasys Retrench As ExOne Sets IPO ... - Investors.com

The two leading makers of three-dimensional printers sold off with gusto Monday. 3D Systems (DDD) led the rock slide, losing 14% in five times its average trade.

Peer Stratasys (SSYS) shed 10% on a big volume bump.

Stratasys stopped at its 50-day moving average and 3D Systems stopped well above its 50-day line. The level of selling in both stocks was serious. In 3D's case, shares fell on the highest volume since a breakout in April.

The main news in the sector came from 3D printing company ExOne, which set terms Monday for its $75 million initial public offering.

The Pennsylvania-based company, which provides printing machines and printed products to industrial customers, plans to sell 5 million shares priced between 14 and 16. The company plans to list on the Nasdaq under the symbol XONE.

Its printers reportedly offer fast, low-cost prototypes made from metal, glass or ceramic powder. But there is no clear read yet, analysts say, on how the new and much smaller entrant may affect the competitive field.

The news arrived just as 3D Systems shares had reached a bit of a precarious position. The stock gapped up 5% last week, breaking above an upper channel line ? a line drawn across the highs since May .

A break above this line is a sell signal, a sign the stock's run may be weakening. In the case of 3D Systems, the signal's importance is compounded by the fact the stock has already broken out of a third-stage base.

Also, shares rose 86% above their 200-day moving average last week. Advances of 70% to 100% above a stock's 200-day moving average may also warn of weakness in a stock's uptrend.

Analysts' consensus forecast for the company's earnings is an increase of 138% in Q4 on a 49% gain in sales. The company will report before the market opens Feb. 25.

Stratasys is also above a third-stage base but it has given up most gains from its November breakout. It had run up as much as 33% from its buy point, vs. a 60% advance for 3D Systems.

Amazon Focuses On Cloud Video With Elastic Transcoder Services ...

Another move today from Amazon that speaks to its growing presence in content delivery and enterprise services, done at competition-beating prices: today the company launched Elastic Transcoder, a new service that lets people upload digital video and put it into formats ? h264, AAC and mp4 for now ? that are usable on devices like smartphones and tablets, as well as PCs. Amazon hopes to lure in users with the promise of 20 minutes of free transcoding each month, but after that it offers pricing tiers based on SD or HD format and length of video, starting at $0.015 for SD or $0.030 for HD per minute, a big discount on existing services like Zencoder.

Interestingly, unlike some of Amazon?s services that see very gradual regional rollouts, this one is launching from day-one with availability for the U.S., Europe and Asia.

The Elastic Transcoder service plays on two sides of Amazon?s business interests. The first is its increasing presence in cloud-based storage and also services wrapped around that.

These services are often aimed at both larger enterprises and developers and startups. In the last week alone, Amazon has introduced a way to incorporate Amazon in-app purchases to games that are published for PCs on Amazon?s games portal; and it has acquired API-based voice recognition service Ivona to compete and one-better Apple?s Siri and Nuance, which powers the iOS voice-recognition service. Meanwhile, for storage Amazon is well-known as a host for a number of apps and sites ? a situation that had far-reaching consequences when Amazon last year saw outages that affected several much-used apps like Instagram, Pinterest and Netflix.

The second area this touches on is Amazon?s growing business in content delivery, specifically video content. Most consumers will know this primarily through services like Amazon Prime Instant Video (or Lovefilm in the UK), which gives users access to premium video content streamed and on demand to compete against the likes of Netflix.

But through its AWS division, Amazon is also a major host and enabler of other companies? video streaming services (including even Netflix). Video transcoding services like the ones being launched today are relevant both for professional producers but perhaps especially for more independent outfits that are looking for cost-effective solutions for small-scale projects. Amazon offers this service on an a la carte basis, making it particularly easy to use for the latter group, and startups in general. (We first spotted news of the launch on Hacker News, Y-Combinator?s startup-focused news service, although eventually Amazon announced the news, too.)

Amazon says that Elastic Transcoder is a one-stop shop. ?There?s no need to administer software, scale hardware, tune performance, or otherwise manage transcoding infrastructure. You simply create a transcoding ?job? specifying the location of your source video and how you want it transcoded,? it writes on the site. ?Amazon Elastic Transcoder also provides transcoding presets for popular output formats, which means that you don?t need to guess about which settings work best on particular devices. All these features are available via service APIs and the AWS Management Console.?

The move, by default, also enhances and promotes the usefulness of Amazon?s other cloud services. The transcoding jobs is run using the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud, also know as Amazon EC2. Amazon also notes that the service is linked up with content stored in Amazon Simple Storage Service (aka Amazon S3). It uses its in-house Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) to alert users of the status of their transcoding jobs.

Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN), is a leading global Internet company and one of the most trafficked Internet retail destinations worldwide. Amazon is one of the first companies to sell products deep into the long tail by housing them in numerous warehouses and distributing products from many partner companies. Amazon directly sells or acts as a platform for the sale of a broad range of products. These include books, music, videos, consumer electronics, clothing and household products. Sand Hill Road?s True Belieber

bieber-1Scott Hartley, a venture capitalist at Mohr Davidow, decided to completely overhaul his investment strategy today after returning from a trip to New York. Hartley, who is originally from Palo Alto, spent a few days in New York for meetings and an interview on Bloomberg TV. When he unlocked his Sand Hill Road office today, he found that his colleague Abhas Gupta had cheerfully Bieberized his new desk on the other side of Mohr Davidow?s office. While at first he was shocked, with a little reflection, it sunk in that the mobile-social wave is over, and that while enterprise is cool, the next wave of disruption is Bieber. “I have a belief that ‘Tech is a Horizontal Enablement Layer‘ that disrupts traditional verticals,” he said. “First, we saw this with the Internet in the 90s, then with mobile as a dominant form factor, and social as a proxy toward authenticity. We believe that the next wave will include Bieber, and we are well positioned in this space.” His colleagues and the firm’s LPs, while stunned by this sudden pivot, were understanding and said they felt confident in Hartley’s abilities to identify the very best early-stage teams in this new Bieberification wave. “The question is how will Bieber disrupt traditional verticals,” he said. “We’re investors in RockHealth, pioneers in the digital health category, and we’re actively seeking opportunities in the vertical disruption Bieber is applying on Sand Hill Road.” He’s working on partnering with Y-Bieber-cubator to source deal flow on companies that have evidence of Bieber-gagement, Bieber-tention, boyishly good looks and mesmerizing hair. He added: If I was your VC, I?d never let you go I can scale you places you ain?t never been before Baby take a chance or you?ll never ever know I got money in my hands that I?d really like to blow Swag swag swag, on you

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients | Psych ...

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on January 27, 2013

Qigong Improves Quality of Life for Breast Cancer Patients New research has found that qigong, an ancient Chinese mind-body practice, has been found to reduce depression and improve the quality of life in women undergoing radiation for breast cancer.

The study examined qigong in patients receiving radiation therapy and included a follow-up period to assess its benefits over time, according to researchers.

?We were [...] particularly interested to see if qigong would benefit patients experiencing depressive symptoms at the start of treatment,? said Lorenzo Cohen, Ph.D., a professor in the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center?s Departments of General Oncology and Behavioral Science.

?It is important for cancer patients to manage stress because it can have a profoundly negative effect on biological systems and inflammatory profiles.?

For the study, Cohen and his colleagues recruited 96 women with stage 1-3 breast cancer from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in Shanghai, China.

About half of the women ? 49 ? were randomly assigned to a qigong group consisting of five 40-minute classes each week during their five-to-six week course of radiation therapy. The remaining 47 women comprised a control group receiving standard care.

The program incorporated a modified version of Chinese medical qigong, which consisted of synchronizing one?s breath with various exercises, the researchers explained.

Participants in both groups completed assessments at the beginning, middle and end of radiation therapy and then one and three months later. Different aspects of quality of life were measured, including depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep disturbances, and overall quality of life.

According to the researchers, patients in the qigong group reported a steady decline in depressive symptom scores beginning at the end of radiation therapy, with a mean score of 12.3, through the three month post-radiation follow-up with a score of 9.5. No changes were noted in the control group over time, the study found.

The study also found that qigong was especially helpful for women reporting high baseline depressive symptoms, Cohen said.

?We examined women?s depressive symptoms at the start of the study to see if women with higher levels would benefit more,? he said.

?In fact, women with low levels of depressive symptoms at the start of radiotherapy had good quality of life throughout treatment and three months later regardless of whether they were in the qigong or control group. However, women with high depressive symptoms in the control group reported the worst levels of depressive symptoms, fatigue, and overall quality of life that were significantly improved for the women in the qigong group.?

As the benefits of qigong were largely observed after treatment concluded, researchers suggest qigong may prevent a delayed symptom burden or expedite the recovery process, especially for women with elevated depressive symptoms at the start of radiation therapy. Cohen notes the delayed effect could be explained by the cumulative nature of the treatments, as the benefits often take time to be realized.

According to the researchers, the findings support other previously reported trials examining the benefits of qigong, but are too preliminary to offer clinical recommendations.

They note that additional research is needed to understand the possible biological mechanisms involved and further explore the use of qigong in ethnically diverse populations with different forms of cancer.

The study was published in the journal Cancer.

Technology kills jobs for middle class | TribLIVE

By The Associated Press

Published: Saturday, January 26, 2013, 12:01?a.m.
Updated 46 minutes ago

NEW YORK ? Five years after the start of the Great Recession, the toll is terrifyingly clear: Millions of middle-class jobs have been lost in developed countries the world over.

And the situation is even worse than it appears.

Most of the jobs will never return, and millions more are likely to vanish as well, say experts who study the labor market. What?s more, these jobs aren?t just being lost to China and other developing countries, and they aren?t just factory work. Increasingly, jobs are disappearing in the service sector, home to two-thirds of all workers.

They?re being obliterated by technology.

Year after year, the software that runs computers and an array of other machines and devices becomes more sophisticated and powerful and capable of doing more efficiently tasks that humans have always done. For decades, science fiction warned of a future when we would be architects of our own obsolescence, replaced by our machines; an Associated Press analysis finds that the future has arrived.

?The jobs that are going away aren?t coming back,? says Andrew McAfee, principal research scientist at the Center for Digital Business at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and co-author of ?Race Against the Machine.? ??I have never seen a period where computers demonstrated as many skills and abilities as they have over the past seven years.?

The global economy is being reshaped by machines that generate and analyze vast amounts of data; by devices such as smartphones and tablet computers that let people work just about anywhere; by smarter, nimbler robots; and by services that let businesses rent computing power when they need it, instead of installing expensive equipment and hiring IT staffs to run it. Whole employment categories, from secretaries to travel agents, are starting to disappear.

?There?s no sector of the economy that?s going to get a pass,? says Martin Ford, who runs a software company and wrote ?The Lights in the Tunnel,? a book predicting widespread job losses. ?It?s everywhere.?

The numbers startle labor economists. In the United States, half the 7.5 million jobs lost during the Great Recession were in industries that pay middle-class wages, ranging from $38,000 to $68,000. But only 2 percent of the 3.5 million jobs gained since the recession ended in June 2009 are in midpay industries. Nearly 70 percent are in low-pay industries, 29 percent in industries that pay well.

In the 17 European countries that use the euro as their currency, the numbers are worse. Almost 4.3 million low-pay jobs have been gained since mid-2009, but the loss of midpay jobs has never stopped. A total of 7.6 million disappeared from January 2008 through last June.

Experts warn that this ?hollowing out? of the middle-class workforce is far from over. They predict the loss of millions more jobs as technology becomes even more sophisticated and reaches deeper into our lives. Maarten Goos, an economist at the University of Leuven in Belgium, says Europe could double its middle-class job losses.

Some occupations are beneficiaries of the march of technology, such as software engineers and app designers for smartphones and tablet computers. Overall, though, technology is eliminating far more jobs than it is creating.

To understand the impact technology is having on middle-class jobs in developed countries, the AP analyzed employment data from 20 countries; tracked changes in hiring by industry, pay and task; compared job losses and gains during recessions and expansions over the past four decades; and interviewed economists, technology experts, robot manufacturers, software developers, entrepreneurs and people in the labor force who ranged from CEOs to the unemployed.

The AP?s key findings:

? For more than three decades, technology has reduced the number of jobs in manufacturing. Robots and other machines controlled by computer programs work faster and make fewer mistakes than humans. Now, that same efficiency is being unleashed in the service economy, which employs more than two-thirds of the workforce in developed countries. Technology is eliminating jobs in office buildings, retail establishments and other businesses consumers deal with every day.

? Technology is being adopted by every kind of organization that employs people. It?s replacing workers in large corporations and small businesses, established companies and start-ups. It?s being used by schools, colleges and universities; hospitals and other medical facilities; nonprofit organizations and the military.

? The most vulnerable workers are doing repetitive tasks that programmers can write software for ? an accountant checking a list of numbers, an office manager filing forms, a paralegal reviewing documents for key words to help in a case. As software becomes even more sophisticated, victims are expected to include those who juggle tasks, such as supervisors and managers ? workers who thought they were protected by a college degree.

? Thanks to technology, companies in the Standard & Poor?s 500 stock index reported one-third more profit the past year than they earned the year before the Great Recession. They?ve also expanded their businesses, but total employment, at 21.1 million, has declined by a half-million.

? Start-ups account for much of the job growth in developed economies, but software is allowing entrepreneurs to launch businesses with a third fewer employees than in the 1990s. There is less need for administrative support and back-office jobs that handle accounting, payroll and benefits.

? It?s becoming a self-serve world. Instead of relying on someone else in the workplace or our personal lives, we use technology to do tasks ourselves. Some find this frustrating; others like the feeling of control. Either way, this trend will only grow as software permeates our lives.

? Technology is replacing workers in developed countries regardless of their politics, policies and laws. Union rules and labor laws may slow the dismissal of employees, but no country is attempting to prohibit organizations from using technology that allows them to operate more efficiently ? and with fewer employees.

Technological innovations have been throwing people out of jobs for centuries. But they eventually created more work, and greater wealth, than they destroyed. Ford, the author and software engineer, thinks there is reason to believe that this time will be different. He sees virtually no end to the inroads of computers into the workplace. Eventually, he says, software will threaten the livelihoods of doctors, lawyers and other highly skilled professionals.

Many economists are encouraged by history and think the gains eventually will outweigh the losses. But even they have doubts.

?What?s different this time is that digital technologies show up in every corner of the economy,? McAfee says.

Peter Lindert, an economist at the University of California, Davis, says the computer is more destructive than innovations in the Industrial Revolution because the pace at which it is upending industries makes it hard for people to adapt.

Occupations that provided middle-class lifestyles for generations can disappear in a few years. Utility meter readers are just one example. As power companies began installing so-called smart readers outside homes, the number of meter readers in the United States plunged from 56,000 in 2001 to 36,000 in 2010, according to the Labor Department.

In 10 years? That number is expected to be zero.

The native Reminders app on the iPhone and iPad are not only simple to use, it'll automatically sync your content between any iOS device and Mac you own. Along with the ability to set up your own reminder lists, you can also choose a default one. That means that new events you add using Siri will end up in the list you've specified.

Here's how to tell Reminders what you want your default list to be...

  1. Launch the Settings app from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap on the Reminders section.
  3. Now tap on Default list.
  4. Tap on the name of the list you'd like the Reminders app to default to when you create a new reminder.

That's all there is to it. The Reminders app will automatically add any non-specified reminder to your default list. If you'd like to add them to other lists with Siri, you can also do that. Check out the link below to find out how.

Lawyer: No proof to charge Romanians for art theft

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? A lawyer for three Romanians accused of stealing valuable paintings from a museum in the Netherlands insisted Friday there was insufficient evidence to charge them.

At a court hearing in Bucharest, the Romanian capital, defense lawyer Doina Lupu urged that the three men not be extradited to the Netherlands for allegedly stealing seven works by Picasso, Monet and Matisse, among others.

"There is no evidence that this was an organized criminal group," she said. "The arrests were based on assumptions and on simple declarations and these are not enough. "

All three men deny any links to the Oct. 16 theft at Rotterdam's Kunsthal gallery.

A prosecutor told the court Friday that suspect Radu Dogaru took two paintings ? one each by Henri Matisse and Paul Gauguin ? to be evaluated by Maria Dragu, the curator for foreign paintings at the Romanian National Art Museum.

Dogaru denied this and Dragu is on leave, the Romanian museum said Friday.

The other two suspects, Alexandru Bitu and Eugen Darie, also denied being involved in the theft. Darie did tell the court he had visited the Kunsthal gallery twice to look at its bronze sculptures.

The Bucharest Court ruled Friday that the men should be kept in custody pending an investigation.

The thieves broke in Oct. 16 through a rear emergency exit at the gallery, grabbed the paintings off the wall and fled, all within two minutes.

The stolen paintings came from the private Triton Foundation, a collection of avant-garde art put together by multimillionaire Willem Cordia, an investor and businessman, and his wife, Marijke Cordia-Van der Laan. Willem Cordia died in 2011.

The stolen paintings were: Pablo Picasso's 1971 "Harlequin Head;" Claude Monet's 1901 "Waterloo Bridge, London" and "Charing Cross Bridge, London;" Matisse's 1919 "Reading Girl in White and Yellow;" Gauguin's 1898 "Girl in Front of Open Window;" Meyer de Haan's "Self-Portrait," around 1890; and Lucian Freud's 2002 work "Woman with Eyes Closed."

The gallery said it had a "state-of-the-art" automated alarm system.

Your Relationship is Not All That Complicated

relationship_its-complicated

Have you ever come across that relationship status on Facebook, ?It?s complicated? and thought to yourself, ?What does that really mean?? I know I have, I know most of us have. Most times, we think it?s a joke and we ignore it. A few times, we?ve actually known the situation that our friends were talking about and we knew that in fact, the situation was complicated. That?s Facebook, but what about in real life? That?s probably a more frequent term to hear, wouldn?t you agree? There?s a guy friend of yours who?s trying to explain how complicated his situation is soooo complicated rather than just admit, it ain?t really working out. (Can?t lie, I?ve been there before.) Or, there?s a girlfriend of yours who?s trying to explain how her situation with Eric is just soooo complicated. She explains over?margaritas?and in one conversation she says, ?Oh my God, you don?t understand?? about 20 times.

I think we?ve all been there before. How do we find the ways to tell our friends that their relationship isn?t all that complicated? Does ?It?s Complicated? really exist? Moreover, what does it really mean to be in a situation that is complicated? I came across this article and thought that I hadn?t read something more accurate with describing ?complicated? relationships. In short, this article seeks to show us that if you think your relationship is complicated, it?s really not. If you describe your relationship as complicated, it?s indicative that maybe it?s not much of a relationship at all. All of us who have been in love or have been in healthy relationships have never had to say, ?it?s complicated.? Either you are in a relationship, or you are not. It?s very simple.

Check out the excerpt and share your thoughts in the comments section:

If when asked about your relationship your first words are ?It?s complicated?, you need to read this.

I often hear women asking whether or not their relationship is the real thing. Wondering if the guy they?re with is the right one for them. Wondering what they should do. And in most cases, as soon as they start describing their situation, it becomes pretty clear that there?s a lot more going on in their situation than?love. If there?s one mantra to make your own, it?s one that states it clearly and simply: real love is never complicated.?Ever.

If, right now, you?re in a situation where there?s a long, drawn out, dramatic story about your relationship,?then it?s complicated. If you?re telling your friends about how he sometimes acts like he?s interested, sometimes not; he?s giving you mixed signals; he?s becoming?emotionally distant; you?re feel as though you should say something about some question mark in your mind, but you?re on the fence as to whether you want to be direct or not; you?re often not sure what he?s really thinking; he?s got an old girlfriend who keeps coming in and out of the picture; he says one thing but his actions are indicating something else; he?s telling you to just give him some time to get his head together; he?s got some stranger than fiction story about how everything fits into his life (including you); he?s got an excuse or an explanation for everything that you question him about that just doesn?t seem quite right; well, you get the picture ??it?s complicated.

The point is, if the situation is complicated, your description of it takes more than a couple sentences to explain, and you find yourself making excuses or justifying why the relationship is not exactly your ideal, then this is not love you?re talking about. I know, we?ve all been in or heard about the high drama?relationships?of so-called love where there?s all the angst, passion, high strung emotions and everything else that makes it fell like the real thing, but the reality is that those kind of relationships, while they may be exciting at first, quickly begin to feel like anything but love. I know. I?ve been there too. The bottom line is, anytime you?ve got that much going on in a relationship, it?s not love. Because love?is just not that.?Real love?is simple.

Doctors urged to screen women for domestic abuse

Women of childbearing age should undergo screening for domestic violence and other forms of abuse while visiting their doctor or clinic, according to a recommendation published online Monday by an influential panel of medical experts that advises the federal government.

That recommendation, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine, marks a significant change from 2004 when the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found insufficient evidence to support screenings for so-called intimate partner violence, or IPV.

Now, citing new evidence, the task force said that screening women for IPV with a list of standard questions showed a "moderate net benefit," while the risks associated with disclosing abuse were small.

If abuse is confirmed, physicians should provide patients with, or refer them to, intervention services, the panel said. Such services include counseling, home visits, information cards, community service referrals and mentor programs.

The guidelines apply only to women aged 14 to 46 who do not show obvious signs of physical or sexual abuse that would otherwise prompt questions from healthcare providers. Though the report acknowledged that women of childbearing age were not the only people who suffered abuse at the hands of former or current intimate partners, evidence was still insufficient to recommend broader screenings, the authors said.

"The bottom line is that more research is needed on how primary-care clinicians can effectively screen and protect all populations, including older and vulnerable adults, middle-aged women, men and children from abuse and violence," said Dr. David Grossman, a Seattle pediatrician and task force member.

In a separate draft statement addressing child maltreatment, task force members said there wasn't enough evidence to recommend how clinicians could prevent abuse among children who lacked obvious symptoms.

Intimate partner violence includes physical violence, sexual abuse, psychological abuse, stalking and reproductive coercion ? intimidation that increases the risk of unplanned pregnancy. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that nearly 31% of women and 26% of men have experienced IPV in their lifetimes. Immediate health consequences include injury, death, sexually transmitted diseases, unintended pregnancy, psychological distress and premature births.

Screening for domestic violence is recommended by the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists for women of all ages. Other organizations, such as the American Medical Assn., encourage physicians to inquire about abuse in all patients as part of medical history, but do not recommend a specific screening format or list of questions.

Monday's recommendation by the task force could possibly steer organizations toward adopting a more standardized protocol, according to some healthcare providers.

"This is very significant," said Eric Ferrero, a Planned Parenthood spokesman who was not involved in the study. "It's just good practice to know a patient's health history, and we have been conducting screenings for a number of years. Hopefully, with this recommendation, it will be done more broadly."

In the case of Planned Parenthood, which treats about 3 million patients in 800 facilities, IPV screenings were sometimes the first time that patients spoke of or even acknowledged abuse, Ferrero said. "We know, at least anecdotally, that this first discussion has led some women to leave an abusive relationship."

The task force recommendation was based on a review of dozens of studies and interviews with more than 30,000 people. Screenings were conducted several ways. Some women were questioned face to face by their healthcare provider and others performed self-screenings, answering questions on either a computer or a printed questionnaire.

Using a Home Equity Loan or Second Mortgage to Fund a Small ...

In basic terms, home equity loans are type of loan through which a person uses the equity in his or her home as collateral.

Equity represents the difference between the amount of any outstanding home mortgage loan and the appraised value of the residence. The lender obtains a lien on the real estate in the same manner as the original mortgage loan lender.

Typically, a home equity loan (also called a second mortgage) is used to obtain funds for home improvements, a child?s college education, to consolidate other debts and the like. The proceeds from a home equity loan can be utilized to fund a small business enterprise.

Funding a Small Business with a Home Equity Loan

The mechanics of funding a small business with a home equity loan are relatively simple. An application is made to a financial institution for a home equity loan or second mortgage. Provided a person has a consistent track record of making mortgage payments in a timely manner, and assuming a cushion in the form of equity remains after a home equity loan, a bank likely will agree to the financing proposal. In the end, under this set of circumstances, a financial institution is not entering into a risky loan agreement.

Once the loan is approved and funds dispersed, the money is then available to be transferred to the small business for its use.

Requirements for Obtaining a Home Equity Loan to Fund a Small Business

As noted previously, one of the essential requirements is a good track record of making the primary mortgage payments in a timely manner. In addition, a financial institution will want to verify that the borrower has a source of income, including possibly a source of income in addition to the small business for which funding is sought.

Keep in mind that if a small business owner is married, the spouse will need to be a party to the home equity loan, even if he or she is not directly involved in the operation of management of the small business.

The Propriety of Funding a Small Business with a Home Equity Loan

The reality is that in challenging economic times, more traditional and direct means of financing are not always readily available to small business. Some banks tend to be leery about lending money to a small venture, particularly a start-up business with no established track record.

Understanding these constraints, using a portion of the equity in a home to obtain a loan for a small business may make sense. A person is well advised not to use the entire equitable balance to secure a loan proceeds for a small business. Some type of personal or family emergency could arise necessitating the needs to tap into a home?s equity to obtain funds.

Tax Consequences of Using Funds from Home Equity Loan for a Small Business

The IRS permits a full deduction by the business for the payments it makes on the loan, despite the fact that the financing originated as a home equity loan or second mortgage. The loan payments are considered a legitimate business expense.

Consult a Professional

On a final note, before transferring funds obtained from a home mortgage loan to a small business, consulting with a tax accountant or attorney is a crucial order of business. The transfer must be done in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, information which is available from a professional experienced in business and tax law as well as accounting.

Dave Morin At DLD: Search Traffic On Path Up 40%, Expect Premium Services This Year

morinDave Morin, founder and CEO of of Path, is literally on a path towards making the private social network into a freemium business along the lines of Evernote. In an interview with TechCrunch, he said we can expect to see changes this year to the 'personal network' which famously limits you to your 'real' 150 friends and family. He said that since launching the new search engine on Path, traffic had gone up by 40%, and that is only with search being available in English. Since Path is available in 18 languages, there is plenty more engagement to be had with users. Next up will be Spanish, and then search will roll out to the other languages starting with Asia: Japanese, Indonesian, Korean and Chinese are next.
