Fusion as an energy source? Physicists demonstrate the acceleration of electrons by a laser in a vacuum

Feb. 27, 2013 ? Accelerating a free electron with a laser has been a longtime goal of solid-state physicists. David Cline, a distinguished professor in the UCLA Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Xiaoping Ding, an assistant researcher at UCLA, have conducted research at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York and have established that an electron beam can be accelerated by a laser in free space.

This has never been done before at high energies and represents a significant breakthrough, Cline said, adding that it also may have implications for fusion as a new energy source.

In free space, a plane-wave laser is unable to accelerate an electron, according to the Lawson-Woodward theorem, posited in 1979. However, Yu-kun Ho, a professor at China's Fudan University in Shanghai, and his research group have proposed a concept of what physicists refer to as the capture-acceleration scenario to show that an electron can be accelerated by a tightly focused laser in a vacuum.

In the capture-acceleration scenario, the diffraction from a tightly focused laser changes not only the intensity distribution of the laser but also its phase distribution, which results in the field phase velocity being lower than the speed of light in a vacuum in some areas.

Thus, a channel that overlaps features of both strong longitudinal electric field and low-laser-phase velocity is created, and electrons can receive energy gain from the laser. The acceleration effect increases along with increasing laser intensity, Cline said. This channel for electrons may be useful for other scientific endeavors, such as guiding an electron beam into a specific region of laser fusion applications, he said.

A possible application of this discovery is the use of laser plasma fusion to provide a new energy source for the U.S. and other countries. The focus of the laser generates a natural channel that can capture electrons and drive them into a pellet that explodes, by fusion, to produce excess energy, Cline said.

With federal funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, a project to carry out a proof-of-principle beam test for the novel vacuum acceleration at Brookhaven National Laboratory's Accelerator Test Facility (BNL-ATF) has been proposed and approved -- a collaboration among the UCLA Center for Advanced Accelerators, of which Cline is principal investigator, Ho's group and the Accelerator Test Facility team.

BNL-ATF is one of the few facilities that can provide both a high-quality electron beam and a high-intensity laser beam for the beam test, Cline said. Ho's group provides theoretical support. UCLA scientists -- Cline, Ding and Lei Shao, a former UCLA physics graduate student of Cline's -- are responsible for the whole experiment and the experimental data analysis.

Simulation research work and hardware design have been done in accordance with BNL-ATF's experimental conditions. The simulation results predict that vacuum laser acceleration phenomena can be observed with ATF's diagnostic system.

Avondale, Pa. Stroud Water Research Center has launched the Watershed Restoration Group to utilize the Center's groundbreaking freshwater science to develop, research, implement, and monitor restoration projects throughout Pennsylvania and beyond.

Matthew Ehrhart, former Pennsylvania executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), joined the Center in January to head the Group. David Wise, also formerly of CBF, accompanied him to serve as the watershed restoration manager.

Ehrhart and Wise have spent much of their careers advancing stewardship of streams in the region, particularly by helping farms implement conservation measures.

Ehrhart holds a Master of Engineering degree from Penn State's Engineering Science Program. After working as an environmental scientist for LandStudies, Inc., he worked as a watershed restoration consultant before joining CBF, where as executive director he was responsible for overseeing a multimillion-dollar agricultural restoration initiative in Pennsylvania.

Wise received his Master of Science degree in Land Resources from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Institute for Environmental Studies. After serving as an environmental science instructor at Lancaster Mennonite High School, he joined CBF first as a biologist and then as the Pennsylvania watershed restoration program manager.

Together, they will bring the Center's mission full circle by sharing knowledge of best management practices (BMPs) and helping landowners, stakeholders, and the general public to implement them.

Center Director Bernard Sweeney said, "Our research, which spans over four decades, has taught us a lot about restoring streams and rivers. We share what we learn with the public through our education programs. Now we're doubling that effort, using our research to create infrastructure to shape a brighter future for our water."

The Watershed Restoration Group has already secured three grants.

One is provided through the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), with funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and Altria Group. It will allow the Group to develop a project to help farmers implement BMPs to address common water quality issues by providing technical assistance and advancing nutrient trading. Partners include more than a dozen public agencies and private groups, and an estimated 27 farms in Lancaster and surrounding counties will participate. A companion grant, provided by the Pa. Department of Environmental Protection's Growing Greener Program, will expand these efforts to additional farms to address water quality impairments.

Another project supported by a grant from NFWF, with funding from the EPA and U.S. Forest Service, will demonstrate low-cost alternatives to existing buffer reforestation methods, which can be expensive and have shown mixed results. Methods to be demonstrated include natural regeneration, direct seeding, and live staking.

Google Chrome OS computers updated with faster processors

By Leo Kelion
Technology reporter

Chromebook Series 5

The new hardware will be limited to online sales and a limited number of stores in the US and UK

First Chromebook on sale in US

Google unveils Chrome laptops

Apple rejects laptop-tablet mix

Google has announced new computers running on its Chrome operating system.

The Samsung-manufactured laptop and desktop PCs include processors based on Intel's Sandy Bridge technology, addressing criticism that the launch models were underpowered.

Chrome-based computers run all their applications through the firm's web browser and store their files online.

Google has not released sales numbers for the previous range, but analysts said demand had been very low.

Tech consultants IDC said that 50,000 Chromebooks had shipped in the US in the first three months of the year in a market that had absorbed about 10 million laptops over the same period.

An earlier study by Gartner suggested there would be fewer than 300,000 Chromebooks sold worldwide this year.

Google Drive

Google says software updates had helped boost the computers' speed so that they ran 2.5 to 3.5 times faster than before. Improvements include greater use of the machines' GPUs (graphic processing units) and tweaks to ensure the system runs Javascript more efficiently.

An upcoming software release will also enable the firm's Google Drive cloud storage service to act as the computers' file system, making it easier for users to manage their documents.

Chromebox Series 3

Google says the new Chromebox will appeal to cost-conscious firms that can attach existing monitors

It will also allow users to edit Google Documents files when offline. The files will subsequently be synchronised when a network connection is restored tackling complaints that the machines were of limited use when not on the internet.

The search giant's decision to build in a limited 16 gigabyte hard drive has helped it keep costs relatively low.

The Chromebook laptop is marketed for $449/?379 while the desktop Chromebox is $329/?279.

Low maintenance

The firm highlights the fact that the devices need "zero administration" because files are stored in the cloud, system updates are controlled by Google and the computers have virus protection built-in.

Chrome versus Android

When Google launched Chrome OS last year some tech watchers wondered whether it would end up battling Google's other Linux-based operating system for supremacy.

Chrome OS was designed for PCs and Android for mobile devices, but there was speculation that the two sectors would merge over time as smartphones and tablets became capable of running more powerful software while PCs adopted touch-based interfaces .

Google acknowledges the issue but plays down the idea of an internal power struggle.

"I don't think it will necessarily be one winning out, but I think you'll see a slow convergence over time," said Chrome engineer Linus Upson.

For the time being, he added, Google was concentrating on getting its Chrome browser running on Android in full.

"Microsoft demonstrated quite convincingly earlier this century that if you try to take one environment and jam it across all devices it wasn't going to work," Mr Upson said.

"So now I think you see a lot more caution ? Apple doesn't try to smash its two [environments] together and we're not trying to do the same, but over time we want to have a seamless user experience across all environments."

Mr Upson also confirmed that his team was "not working on a Chrome OS right now".

Linus Upson, Google's vice president of engineering, told the BBC that this had already encouraged more than 500 schools across 41 US states to "deploy" Chromebooks to their students. He said he hoped businesses would now follow.

"From a security standpoint just about every major corporation in the world is under continuous attack by various governments around the world as well as criminal enterprises," he said

"Probably the single most important thing companies can do to secure their network is to secure the PCs that their employees use because that's normally the way in.

"Everything from a phishing email saying 'hey install this thing' to exploiting flaws in browsers or plug-ins. At Google we see deploying Chromebooks broadly as being one of the best ways we can protect our user data."

He admitted that the computers were not suitable for people wanting to use traditional software packages such as Photoshop and Microsoft Office. But he suggested such programs were "legacy" products that would "decline over time" as users opted for the type of browser-based software available via the Chrome Webstore.

Mixed reactions

David Daoud, personal computing research director at IDC, is sceptical about the platform's prospects.

"The issue with Chromebook is the fact that it is in a sort of grey zone," he said.

"It has neither the power of a laptop in the productivity world, nor the appeal of an iPad or an Android tablet.

"It is confined to a web environment that may not be so appealing in emerging economies where the wireless infrastructure may be limited. In such environments, characterised by tight budgets, consumers do not see why they would spend some $400 on a system that does not fully deliver on a more comprehensive user experience."

Chrome Store

Google says the applications, games and utilities on its Chrome Web Store offer an alternative to traditional software packages

But Frank Gillett, principal analyst at Forrester Research, said he believed there was a niche for the machines: first-time users looking for a low-cost simple device.

"It's cheap, good enough for most of the things you want to do when you're starting out and it's just less complicated to figure out than alternatives out there," he told the BBC.

"This is the first interesting version of the product ? the launch models were more proof of concept. The Google Drive capability clears the bar to making Chrome-based computers useful to enough of the population to keep it going."

Google says the computers will go on sale in the US and UK, adding that devices would come to other European markets "soon".

How Rich Media Content Marketing Could Destroy Small Business ...

rich media content marketingIn the marketers calendar, 2012 was named the Year of Content Marketing.

My guess, is 2013 will be known as the Year of Rich Media Content Marketing.

I?m not smart enough to understand where the tipping point happened, but all of the sudden every marketer realized that the content we produce online needs to deliver value and serve a business purpose.

So we began to create content with reckless abandon.

For some Big Box companies like LEGO, Nike, BMW and GEICO content marketing came naturally. ?These companies leveraged their size and brand to create enormous amounts of content spread out over multiple blogs and every social media tool imaginable. ?Through aggressive keyword research and strategy every market was flooded with target specific content.

{For more great examples of content marketing read this Content Marketing Institute eBook}

Why wouldn?t these mega-brands hire armies of marketers and copywriters to get their message online?

This is the age of Content Warfare? and we?re all trying to win the battle for attention online.

The interesting thing about content warfare, unlike any real battle, is the little guy has always had a chance to compete. ?Especially at the local level. ?At a local level the unfunded, under-resourced small business even has the opportunity to win the battle for attention online.

At least that was the case in 2012, when we all took to the blogosphere and social media to tell our story through content marketing.

The gap was narrowing.

The Google Penguin and Panda updates were a full frontal attack on low quality link building and content marketing strategies?

?and 2012 was the year that a huge budget couldn?t simply buy you the attention you wanted.

Attention had to be earned through quality content.

Small, local businesses who took their message of value and service and community to the Internet could actually show up higher in search results then their Big Box competitors who for so long monopolized page one Google Search results.

Rich media content marketing is again swinging the balance of inbound marketing power in favor of large brands.

While 2012 saw small business adoption of text based content marketing as a vital component of doing business, in 2013 large brand professional marketers are moving beyond text to rich media content marketing strategies such as podcasts, video, slideshows, eBooks and infographics to deliver their message.

My friend Srini Rao from BlogcastFM and The Skool of Life refers to these as ?Larger bodies of work.? ?The idea being that the content marketing rush of 2012 flooded the Internet with blog posts and in order to stand out from the crowd we have to produce larger bodies of work to tell our story.

The consuming public as begun to view regular text-based blog posts as the norm, the standard for doing business online. ?You must have a consistent stream of regular text based blog posts to educate and entertain the consumers of your product.

But if you want to make a impact, if you want to stand out, if you want consumers to be invested in your brand and business you must produce larger bodies of work in the form of rich media content marketing. ?Rich media takes consumers farther down the rabbit hole of who you are both as a person and a business.

Text based content draws consumers in but rich media establishes a much deeper relationship.

Professional marketers realize this and are moving forward.

Small business marketers do not and are about to fall behind once again.

So where I saw the 2012 content marketing revolution as a huge boon for small business, I see the move to rich media content marketing as a potential death stroke.

Why?

Because creating rich media takes time, effort, planning, creativity, vulnerability, humor, discipline, energy, passion and a little bit of art.

We past the point that small business marketers can ?dip their toe? into content marketing. ?This content warfare. If small business marketers don?t put in the word now there could come a day when attention is lost forever.

Wait?

Small businesses have all those things.

Hell yes they do? and so comes the rub.

In the rich media content marketing game there is one huge advantage that professional marketers have and there is one huge advantage that small businesses have:

Professional marketers have resources.

Small businesses have maneuverability.

Because of the resources at the disposal of most professional marketers creating rich media is not going to be the hurdle, formatting their established brand message in way the Connected Generation responds is the hurdle.

Small businesses will certainly face the barrier of rich media creation, but formulating a message that addresses the need of local consumers in the way these consumers want to view it should not be an issue.

What I?m telling you is hope is not lost for the small business marketer!

Let?s Examine How Small Business Can Use Rich Media Content Marketing

Podcasting

To me the most intimate form of online content is podcasting. ?Removing the visual aspect of the content focuses the mind on exactly what and how a message is delivered. ?Is the individual passionate, silly, focused, or disconnected? ?The Content Warfare Podcast?is growing by 100s listeners every week. ?Podcasts from A-listers like Michael Stelzner and Chris Brogan get tens of thousands of listeners every single episode.

Why is podcasting important to your business?

Simple. ?Someone reads a blog post it might take 45 seconds. ?If someone listens to your podcast you have their attention for 30 minutes. ?That is a huge investment of time by the listener. ?How much deeper and stronger a relationship are you building with someone who spends 30 minutes with your content than someone you spends 45 seconds?

Video

There is absolutely no doubt that using video as part of your rich media content marketing strategy drives engagement, just take a look at my SEO experiment. ?Video gives your consumers a look at who you really are. ?It?s much harder to fake expertise in front of a camera than it is writing a blog post. ?Don?t discount the importance of that fact.

Why is video important to your business?

First when I say video I really mean YouTube. I know there are other online video networks like Vimeo, but to me there is YouTube and everything else. ?YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine after Google which means having a video presence on YouTube gives you access to an entire community of consumers you weren?t otherwise marketing to. ?Additionally,?Google loves YouTube (remember Google plays favorites) and ranks quality YouTube video in Google Search quite high.

Second, video allows us to tell our story or explain the value in our product in a much different way. ?Humans, by nature are visual creatures. ?So telling our story in a visual manner through video is going to have a distinct and lasting affect on the consumers who view it.

Slideshows

There has been quite a bit written about Slideshare?(a social network for slideshows) being the sleeping giant of content marketing. ?I?m not quite sure I?m ready to buy that yet?. Sleeping giant implies Slideshare could one day completely take over the rich media content marketing game. ?I don?t believe that to be true. ?However, I do think it could be just as important a tool as podcasting and video.

Why are slideshows important to our business??

A good Slideshare presentation tells a story or makes an argument one thought at a time. ?Bullet points are for losers. ?A slideshow done right provides the viewer with one powerful concept after another each building a foundation for the message the creator is attempting to deliver.

I really like how easy Slideshare presentations are to consume and share. ?Unlike a video or podcast where the consumer needs to block off time to take in the content, with Slideshare the content can be viewed at whatever pace or timing the viewer prefers.

eBooks

After years of eBooks being created as low quality lead magnets for sleazy Internet marketers to build their email lists, it?s not surprising that eBooks are viewed by many professional marketers as a 2nd tier form of rich media. ?Don?t believe the hype. ?eBooks done right, written with the purpose of expanding upon a topic or idea that delivers value to the consumers of your product still have immense value as a form of rich media content marketing.

Why are eBooks important to my business??

eBooks allow you dive deep into your products and service as well as the issues surrounding them. My straight job is marketing an independent insurance agency. ?We?re currently creating a entire series of eBooks around maintenance and safety with the premise being, ?Do these little things today, so don?t have to deal with big problems tomorrow.? Our eBooks will help insurance consumers reduce the opportunity of ever having to use their insurance.

I feel there is value in this information and I firmly believe the insurance consumers who download and read these eBooks will affix that value in return to our brand. ?The same goes for The No Bullshit Guide to a Successful Blog. ?Everyone who reads this eBook knows exactly how I go about content marketing and the steps they can take to implement those beliefs into their own blog.

Successful blog eBook?Infographics

Infographics allow us to tell a story or make an argument through a single image. ?As mentioned above, humans are incredibly visual creatures. ?There are many concepts that are simply easier to digest and understand when laid out in a visual format than written in a text blog post. ?Infographics help us do that.

Why are infographics important to my business?

Infographics have a very powerful way of delivering information. ?They also allow for a lot of creativity which helps distinguish our brand from that of our competitors. ?Additionally infographics are heavily shared, meaning people love to share infographics in social media as well post other people?s infographics on their own blog or website. ?This means your message, which may have died on your blog in text form, as an infographic has the opportunity to spread.

I?ve collected over 75 fantastic infographics on Pinterest if you?re looking for some more examples. ?Click here to view my infographic pin board.

Embrace the Rich Media Content Marketing Revolution

As consumers demand more rich media, we as content marketers must be willing to go outside text based content to build the deeper relationships necessary to win the battle for attention online.

Abnormal growth regulation may occur in children with heart defects

Feb. 19, 2013 ? The poor growth seen in children born with complex heart defects may result from factors beyond deficient nutrition. A new study by pediatric researchers suggests that abnormalities in overall growth regulation play a role.

"When compared with their healthy peers, children with congenital heart disease have impaired growth, as measured in weight, length, and head circumference," said senior author Meryl S. Cohen, M.D., a pediatric cardiologist in the Cardiac Center at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. "We investigated patterns of poor growth in these children, as a starting point in guiding us toward more effective treatments."

The study appeared as an online article in the January 2013 issue of Pediatrics.

The researchers performed a retrospective analysis of medical records of 856 children with congenital heart disease (CHD), compared to 7,654 matched control subjects. All the children were measured up to age 3, and all were drawn from the healthcare network of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Within weeks of birth, the children with CHD had significant deficits in weight, length and head circumference, compared to matched controls without CHD. The largest differences in weight occurred at 4 months of age. Among the 856 children with CHD, the 248 who required surgical repair were much more likely to be below the 3rd percentile in weight, length and head circumference during early infancy, and their growth by age 3 did not catch up with that of their healthy peers.

In the 608 children with CHD who did not require surgery, growth differences were not as pronounced, but even their growth patterns lagged behind those of healthy controls.

Researchers already knew that children with CHD have an increased risk for poor growth, but this analysis provides a fuller picture of the problem. Cohen observed that in the general population, when caloric intake is insufficient, an infant's weight is usually affected first, followed by length and head circumference. "The fact that all three parameters changed simultaneously rather than sequentially supports the idea that impaired growth in children with heart disease is affected at least in part by factors unrelated to nutrition."

She added that further studies should investigate the possible roles of growth hormones and other physiologic factors that affect growth regulation in children with CHD.

Cohen's co-authors were first author Carrie Daymont, M.D., of the University of Manitoba, Ashley Neal, M.D., of Children's Hospital Boston, and Aaron Prosnitz, M.D., of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital. All were at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia when the research was performed.

US security firm alleges massive Chinese hacking

BEIJING (AP) ? Cyberattacks that stole massive amounts of information from military contractors, energy companies and other key industries in the U.S. and elsewhere have been traced to the doorstep of a Chinese military unit, a U.S. security firm alleged Tuesday.

China's Foreign Ministry dismissed the report as "groundless," and the Defense Ministry denied any involvement in hacking attacks.

China has frequently been accused of hacking, but the report by Virginia-based Mandiant Corp. contains some of the most extensive and detailed accusations to date linking its military to a wave of cyberspying against U.S. and other foreign companies and government agencies.

Mandiant said it traced the hacking back to a neighborhood in the outskirts of Shanghai that includes a drab, white 12-story office building run by "Unit 61398" of the People's Liberation Army.

The unit "has systematically stolen hundreds of terabytes of data from at least 141 organizations," Mandiant wrote. By comparison, the U.S. Library of Congress 2006-2010 Twitter archive of about 170 billion tweets totals 133.2 terabytes.

"From our observations, it is one of the most prolific cyberespionage groups in terms of the sheer quantity of information stolen," the company said. It added that the unit has been in operation since at least 2006.

Mandiant said it decided that revealing the results of its investigation was worth the risk of the hackers changing their tactics and becoming even more difficult to trace.

"It is time to acknowledge the threat is originating in China, and we wanted to do our part to arm and prepare security professionals to combat that threat effectively," it said.

In a statement faxed to The Associated Press, the Defense Ministry firmly rejected any involvement in hacking, saying Chinese law forbids all activities harming Internet security.

"The Chinese government has always firmly combated such activities and the Chinese military has never supported any form of hacking activity," the ministry said. "Statements to the effect that the Chinese military takes part in Internet attacks are unprofessional and are not in accordance with the facts."

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei did not directly address the claims, but when questioned on the report Tuesday, he said he doubted the evidence would withstand scrutiny.

"To make groundless accusations based on some rough material is neither responsible nor professional," Hong told reporters at a regularly scheduled news conference.

Reiterating a standard China government response on hacking claims, Hong said China itself is a major victim of such crimes, including attacks originating in the United States.

"As of now, the cyberattacks and cybercrimes China has suffered are rising rapidly every year," Hong said.

Mandiant's methodology used in the investigation was sound, said Massimo Cotrozzi, managing director of KCS Group, a London-based international cyber investigation consulting firm that was not involved in Mandiant's research.

"No one as yet has provided the world conclusive evidence of a link between the Chinese military and the attacks. This report is the nearest thing to conclusive evidence that I have seen," Cotrozzi said.

Mandiant said its findings led it to alter the conclusion of a 2010 report it wrote on Chinese hacking, in which it said it was not possible to determine the extent of government knowledge of such activities.

"The details we have analyzed during hundreds of investigations convince us that the groups conducting these activities are based primarily in China and that the Chinese government is aware of them," the company said in a summary of its latest report.

It said the hacking was traced to the 2nd Bureau of the People's Liberation Army General Staff's 3rd Department, most commonly known as unit 61398, in the Shanghai suburbs.

News of the report spread Tuesday on the Chinese Internet, with many commentators calling it an excuse for the U.S. to impose greater restrictions to contain China's growing technological prowess.

Graham Cluley, a British cybersecurity expert who was not involved in Mandiant's research, said people in the computer industry believe China's government is behind such attacks but have been unable to confirm the source.

"None of us would be very surprised or be uncomfortable saying we strongly suspect the Chinese authorities are involved in spying this way," said Cluley, a senior technology consultant for security firm Sophos in Britain.

"I think we are seeing a steady escalation" of sophistication in hacking, Cluley said. "This is really the new era of cybercrime. We've moved from kids in their bedroom and financially motivated crime to state-sponsored cybercrime, which is interested in stealing secrets and getting military or commercial advantage."

'Arrested Development': Kristen Wiig Cast As Young Lucille Bluth In Netflix Season 4

Just when you thought Netflix's "Arrested Development" revival couldn't get any more awesome, Vulture broke the news that "Bridesmaids" star Kristen Wiig would guest star in Season 4 as ... a young Lucille Bluth!

Yes, the "Saturday Night Live" MVP will be playing a younger version of Jessica Walter's sociopathic matriarch, which hopefully means that the show is also on the lookout for someone to play a younger version of her nemesis, Lucille 2 (Liza Minnelli) when the show premieres on Netflix in May. Further details on Wiig's role are being kept under wraps.

In addition to Wiig and Seth Rogen, familiar faces such as John Slattery, Ben Schwartz, Chris Diamantopoulos, Conan O'Brien, Andy Richter, Isla Fisher and Terry Crews will be making their "AD" debut in Season 4.

While it's a given that the entire dysfunctional Bluth clan will be back, other returning stars include Minneilli, Judy Greer as Kitty Sanchez, Mae Whitman as Ann Veal, Henry Winkler as Barry Zuckerkorn, James Lipton as Warden Stefan Gentles, Carl Weathers as himself, and Scott Baio as Bob Loblaw. Earlier this month, executive producer/narrator Ron Howard tweeted what could be the first cast photo from the show's new season.

Are you excited to see Kristen Wiig on "Arrested Development"? Who do you think could play a young Lucille 2?

    • Barry Zuckerkorn

Played by: Henry Winkler Winkler actually made us forget the Fonz with his performance as the Bluth's memorably incompetent lawyer, whose attempts to give the family legal advice were hindered by the fact that he appeared to know nothing about the law. Maybe Zuckerkorn was so cheerfully unhelpful because he was more focused on his mysterious personal life, which involved rest stops, prostitutes and predilections that sounded, shall we say, unconventional. The show's Fonzie references had him giving a familiar "Ayyy!" in the mirror before combing his hair and, at one point, referencing an infamous "Happy Days" scene by jumping over a shark. ?

    • Bob Loblaw

Played by: Scott Baio? This Bluth family lawyer appeared to be a slightly more competent than Barry Zuckerkorn, but you'd think an ethical attorney would not represent one Bluth spouse while dating another, as happened when he worked on Tobias and Lindsay's divorce. Most notable for the slogan in his low-budget TV ads ("Why should you go to jail for a crime someone else noticed?") and for his web site, the Bob Loblaw Law Blog.?

    • Stan Sitwell

Played by: Ed Begley Jr.? This hairless land magnate (whose misplaced eyebrows were a dependable source of hilarity) was the Bluth Company's frequent antagonist, and the forthright way in which he conducted business stood in contrast to the Bluth's frequent ethical lapses. The families' frienemy status went back years -- Michael always had a crush on his daughter, Sally (Christine Taylor), but he could never quite close that deal.?

    • Lucille Austero

Played by: Liza Minnelli The vertigo-challenged retiree was Buster's paramour for a while, despite his fear of (and attraction to) older women and her problems staying upright. Minnelli's game, energetic performance as Lucille was a lot of fun, and her rivalry with Lucille 1 was especially delicious.?

    • Tony Wonder

Played by: Ben Stiller? GOB's magician idol was every bit as douchey as you'd expect him to be, and if we have any complaints about the character, it's that Stiller's schedule didn't allow him to stop by the Gothic Castle that often.?No doubt true Tony Wonder fans own his stupendous magic video, "Use Your Allusion."

    • Kitty Sanchez

Played by: Judy Greer "Take a look at these!" You might recall Kitty Sanchez as an unstable former Bluth Company employee who was prone to showing off her breast implants, and that just about describes her particular brand of freaky insanity. But don't forget her infamous drink-off with Lucille at Senor Tadpoles, her creepy affair with GOB and her devious attempts to extort the Bluth family and steal George's sperm (timeless wisdom from George: "Never promise crazy a baby"). Would any of it have turned out differently if the producers of the "Girls with Low Self-Esteem" video series hadn't rejected a pre-implant Kitty??

    • Annyong

Played by: Justin Lee George and Lucille's attempt to adopt a child came at an inopportune time: He arrived in the midst of the government's prosecution of George Bluth's various crimes. Still, Annyong was soon one of the family (much to Buster's chagrin), and though he went missing for much of Season 2, George found him living inside the walls of Lucille's condo in Season 3. Most memorable quote: "Annyong!"

    • Steve Holt!

Played by: Justin Grant Wade This popular jock was the object of Maeby's affections for quite some time, until she found out that GOB was his father and thus <em>Steve Holt! </em>was her cousin. (George Michael, despite his jealousy, was torn about informing Maeby of this fact, given that he himself had a crush on his cousin.) In the show's third season, he and GOB explored their father-son relationship, and even Michael got pulled into the <em>Steve Holt! </em>cult when he trained for a triathalon with him. Steve's exhortation to a weary Michael: "There's no 'I' in win!"?

    • Wife of GOB

Played by: Amy Poehler Poehler played the wife of her real-life husband, Will Arnett, in a few episodes that highlighted both the haste with which GOB tied the knot and the fact that he never actually slept with her the night they got hitched. One of the few fans of Dr. Funke's 100% Natural Good-Time Family Band Solution, she figured prominently in the infamous "loose seal" incident that deprived Buster of his hand, and when she was in the Army, she had an unfortunate tendency to pose for very questionable photos.

    • Carl Weathers

Playing himself, the "Predator" actor sold Tobias a series of worthless acting lessons, but the most valuable advice he offered consisted of lessons in being thrifty. Thanks to Weathers, "Arrested Development" fans no longer throw away bones after a meal -- they make a stew. There's still plenty of meat on that bone!?

    • Stefan Gentles

Played by: James Lipton? The warden of George's prison was an artistic soul: He allowed Tobias to bunk in a cell to prepare for a tiny role as an inmate, and he later pitched Maeby on his script for "New Warden," a hilarious compendium of jail cliches that, in one episode, was acted out by little kids.?Needless to say, a savvy executive like Maeby wasn't interested.

    • Franklin Delano Bluth

In a cast full of characters who are willing to say almost anything, Franklin, a puppet GOB used in his act, stood out. His song "It Ain't Easy Bein' White" wasn't the crossover hit GOB was hoping for, and in a tragic turn of events, he was accidentally dyed white. Before that, an angry Franklin delivered a stinging putdown to Lucille in the clip here. (I don't know who's more shocked by Franklin's outburst, Lucille or Buster.)

    • Phillip Litt

Played by: Zach Braff? The magnate at the heart of the Girls With Low Self-Esteem empire shared an unlikely secret with Tobias: They were both Never-Nudes, nudity-shunners who sported matching cut-offs beneath their clothes. There were quite a few notable actors (Martin Mull as Gene Parmesan, Malik Yoba as Ice, Jane Lynch as Cindi Lightballoon, Robb Corddry as Moses Taylor) whose roles on "AD" weren't large, but they made a strong impression anyway.

    • Ann Veal

Played by: Mae Whitman Can't quite recall this character. Was her name Yam? Bland? Plant? Annabelle? In all seriousness, Mae Whitman is a terrific actress, but the show had a lot of fun with Michael's inability to remember anything about her or even that his son was dating her. Really? Her?

    • J. Walter Weatherman

Played by: Steve Ryan This one-armed man was a constant menace during the Bluth children's childhood: George would employ Weatherman in grisly scenarios designed to teach the kids lessons ("And that's why we leave a note!"). He was central to the hilarious pot bust that took place at the Bluth's boat, and at one point in Season 3, he teamed up with the handless Buster to deliver an elaborate lesson to the Bluth brothers, after Buster ran into him at Weatherman's prosthetics shop. But I'll stop there, because I've learned my lesson: <em>That's</em> why we don't make lists of supporting characters!?

    HTC One early hands-on!

The HTC One launch event has just begun, but we've already got our first hands-on! Not a lot of details at this point, as the phone is still being announced on-stage, but a kindly gentlemen sitting in the audience who had a handset let us try his out for a few moments. Early impressions are that the phone feels great in the hand, very thin and very well made. The UI customizations, meanwhile, are another story entirely. Very Windows Phone-like, we're not sure traditional Android fans are going to love it. Enjoy the pics for now, we'll be back with more details soon!

Update: Here's our full, formal hands-on!

TX Rep. tells Soledad: Immigrant ?amnesty? alone won?t sway Latinos toward GOP

    By Arturo Garcia
    Monday, February 18, 2013 9:28 EST

    ?

GOP Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) expressed cynicism on Monday toward an immigration plan that included a path to citizenship for the country?s 11 million undocumented immigrants.

?People make a mistake when they think all Hispanics want is to see an amnesty program, and then they?re going to love Republicans again,? Burgess told CNN host Soledad O?Brien and her panelists, adding that immigration reform did not benefit another Texas Republican, George H.W. Bush, in 1988.

?It?s that sort of activity that, forgive me, makes me a little bit cynical,? said Burgess.

Burgess also criticized the release of the White House?s ?Plan B? immigration proposal, which would call for, among other things, the creation of a ?Lawful Prospective Immigrant? visa that would put qualified applicants on an 8-year path to U.S. residency. President Barack Obama promised earlier this year to deliver his own set of immigration mandates if he felt lawmakers were not moving quickly enough on that issue.

Obama?s proposal, Burgess said, was similar to a plan Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) worked on in 2007, but it was the visa feature that doomed it to failure.

?No one believes that the United States Congress can do something this complicated competently,? Burgess said. ?So for it to be pushed out into center stage like this by the president ? He?s kind of got a history of ignoring people with whom he should be working, constituencies with whom he should be working.?

?But everyone?s always ? many times, on this program ? complaining that the president doesn?t show leadership,? O?Brien interjected. ?That he?s not stepping out with a plan. ?Have him do something.? I mean, literally, specifically, on immigration, I?ve heard that a dozen times. And now when he finally has a plan that?s leaked, and maybe it was a real leak, or maybe it was a ?fake leak,? everyone?s now mad that he leaked some plan that, as you say, harkens back to 2007.?

Burgess concurred with O?Brien that the release of ?Plan B? was likely on purpose, saying, ?nothing in Washington happens by accident,? but again knocked Obama for not including others in his decision-making, namely the bipartisan ?Group of 8? of McCain and seven other senators, which has issued its own immigration proposal.

?You?ve got eight senators working in a bipartisan fashion on something,? he said. ?Why not huddle with them and see what you can work on collaboratively rather than this go it alone approach??

Watch Burgess discuss the latest round of immigration proposals with O?Brien and her panel, as aired Monday on CNN, below.

Texas baby gorilla coming to Cincinnati Zoo

A gorilla born last month at a South Texas zoo has been ignored by her mother so the animal will be sent to an Ohio zoo and introduced to a new troop.

Officials with the Gladys Porter Zoo in Brownsville have been caring for the young animal being moved this week to the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. Experts hope the western lowland gorilla born Jan. 29 will bond with two adult female gorillas at her new home.

The mother moved to the Gladys Porter Zoo in 2011 as part of an Association of Zoos and Aquariums species survival breeding plan.? The mother was from the Pittsburg Zoo & PPG Aquarium but was on a breeding loan transfer from the Cincinnati Zoo.

The baby gorilla has not yet been named.

What Your Wedding Business Can Learn From Las Vegas

Las Vegas.? Sin City.? Land of Elvis, Entertainment Capital of the World, internationally famous monument to 24 hour sensory indulgence.

Jeff and I visited Las Vegas last week to present at the Mobilebeat Convention (Shout out to our DJ brothers and sisters!) and I found myself wondering?

What Las Vegas teach us about the wedding business?

Gazing out at the bright lights of the strip, it suddenly hit me.

How to Stand Out in the Crowd

Most of the action happens right the on the Las Vegas strip.? If you?re staying in town, it?s where you want to be.? And within those 4.2 miles you have 62,000 hotel rooms and 15 of the world?s 25 largest hotels slammed right up against each other.

Think about that: these hotels are all competing for tourists? business with their biggest competitors right next door.

And we complain about the competition in the wedding industry!

So how do they do it?

Each of these hotels is famous for One Thing.? The Bellagio has the fountains.? The Mirage has a volcano.? The Luxor has the Egyptian pyramids.? Caesar?s Palace delights gluttons with its Bacchanal Buffet boasting over 500+ dishes prepared by top chefs.

Slammed up right against the competition, each hotel has no choice but to STAND OUT?or get squashed.

Each hotel appeals to a different group of people.? Becoming known for a single special feature attracts the customers who want that specialty, and allows each of these iconic hotels to thrive even in the midst of all that competition. They aren?t forced into competing on price because no one else can do what they do.

Of course, there are some sad hotels on the Strip that are famous for the Cheapest Hotel Room Rates in Vegas.? But I wouldn?t recommend modeling your wedding business after them, unless you enjoy living off the scraps of the Big Guys who make all the money and get all the glory.

The easiest way to stand out from the competition is to become known for your Unique Factor; once you are the #1 or the Only option in your market, you have no competition.

Take a lesson for the Vegas hotels and go bold.? Be different.? Declare your uniqueness to the world and reap the rewards of uniqueness.

Smash the Competition With One Sentence

What would you like to be famous for?

If you could pick One Thing to be known for in your wedding market, what would it be?

    Finish this sentence:

?[Insert the name of your business] is famous for being the #1??

Choose your speciality, own it and build it into every piece of marketing you have.? Become the #1 source of something and you?ll never have to compete on price again.

What makes you totally unique in your market?

I do use a professional web company for the SEO. I have been disappointed with BT it sends people to a landing page first and although they can tell me how many visitors to the landing page they can't tell me how many people click to my actual site.

Last time I audited a PPC campaign set up by BT, they weren't geotargeting the searches, for a local business with a 20 mile radius.

The result? A conservatory installer in the Scottish Highlands was getting PPC clicks from people from Southampton to Cardiff.

Perhaps they've improved, but surely a quick review couldn't hurt.

Depending on your business and target market, Facebook ads might work, Bing advertising, or many other possible traffic sources. A bit more info might clarify.

I am happy to sell anywhere in England/Scotland.

For the money I am spending how many visitors should I be getting to my site?

Do I need to spend more on SEO and Adwords. I have been told that whatever I put into Adwords I should be getting out in orders, but that is not the case.

    Thanks

If your Adwords isn't generating sales, then you don't need to spend more.

Sometimes problems with Adwords leading to sales include:
    - poor ad copy that attracts people for the wrong reasons
    - running the wrong times of day, days of week or locations
    - landing page where visitors arrive on site is poor quality, prices are too high, or other turn-off

Adwords test campaigns need to be profitable before thinking about ramping up!!

Thanks for the advice webgeek. I think I need to review both SEO and the BT Adwords before a plough more money into them.

    Thanks.

You really need to track your conversion and hence ROI. You need to get to grips with your analytics before making marketing investment decisions.

BT are a telecoms company...I'm curious as to why you chose them for PPC?
